About Us
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
The group was founded by Ingrid Henry, mother of 3, Kaan, Sophia (Twinkle) and Aston.
Taking 3 years for her son to be formerly diagnosed with Autism, it was a long struggle during which time her son was treated differently at school by teachers and by all the other children. Not invited to parties, struggling to make friends, and often left out. It was a long and emotional struggle with little help along the way.
Upon being diagnosed, Ingrid embarked on a journey to find others in the position as herself and build friendships, support and a life for her son.
From this, Twinkles was formed. A group of families all of which were learning to cope with life after learning their child had special educational needs - but little help in finding those special educational needs. You see, 'educational' doesn't just mean school - it includes their social growth, and play is such an important factor in a child's growth that it is grossly overlooked within a SEN child's development. These families found that mainstream children don't want to play with a child with Autism because they are 'different', their children need this engagement for their social and mental growth, but their children weren't included in games in the playground, or invited to parties, play dates or sleepovers.
So Twinkles includes families who are still going through diagnosis because these children and their families need the help from the start of their journey. Twinkles arranges group activities and events allowing SEN children to find their place within a social environment and grow socially, being stimulated physically and mentally. Our events are non-judgemental, accepting of all abilities and disabilities, those diagnosed and those on the pathway to diagnosis. It also provides a support network of parents who have gone through the process who can help those who are just staring their journey - as many of our members say
"It's a lifeline and a game changer"
What's New
Over the last 5 years our group has grown from a small group of friends supporting eachother and organising events for their children to meet up and feel included, to over 5000 followers and a host of organised events every month. We are applying for lottery funding to help grow our facilities as we would love to bring our to so many more people and be able to provide separate events for older and younger children. Our website is new too - giving our members more information about our group and making buying tickets easier and with less fees.
